Data Protection Roundup – Winter 2020
How have content and data in the business world changed since you started your career? Even if you’re relatively new to your role or profession, change happens fast. In the last several years alone, the amount of unstructured content in the average business and the risk factors associated with large amounts of data have both grown exponentially.
As we’ve watched this expansion, we’ve worked to find new ways and opportunities to expand our governance and security capabilities to better protect our customers and their sensitive information. Wondering what we’ve added? Here are just a few highlights from the last few months:
Of course, the hope is that you never experience a breach. But if you do, enabling a fast, accurate response can make all the difference. Breach Reporting in Egnyte makes it easy to automatically prepare breach impact statements in accordance with regulations. It helps admins assess the impact of a breach, generating a summary report of impacted individuals and counts of sensitive information exposed.
Windows File Server Sensitive Content Remediation
WFS is the most common on-prem file server in the world, so expanding governance and compliance capabilities in that environment can have a big impact for our users. Egnyte has long enabled classification of WFS content, and now that includes the ability to move or delete files determined to contain sensitive content.
Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) Classification Support
Amazon S3 Classification Support expands the scope of how Protect can help govern data in non-Egnyte repositories. Egnyte can now scan S3 repositories to find sensitive, regulated and risky data. Once you connect your S3 repository to Egnyte in just a few quick clicks from the Content Sources screen, you’ll have immediate visibility into the results.
CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act) Enhancements
When data protection laws change at the last minute (as in this case, when it was decided that personal data, such as an email address, must be coupled with another piece of identifying data in order to be subject), the dynamic nature of always-on classification makes it easy for us to update the policy within our product, keeping customers current without any work on their part. When this change was implemented, customers saw a reduction in flagged CCPA issues by up to 84%
Enhanced Legal Hold
If your organization has information that may be relevant to litigation, it’s critical that you secure everything that might be related. The legal hold enhancements now provide the ability to create a legal hold based on folder-location as opposed to just subject name or date. This breaks away from the existing “person + date” formula to allow customers to hold an entire folder related to one client or project subject to litigation.
We’re always looking ahead for more opportunities to help our customers manage their content securely, safely and within regulatory boundaries. We’ll regularly update you here about the changes and enhancements we’re making, so keep an eye out for more!
